Dr. Matthew Sporn is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at Surgical Specialists of Greater New York, he is affiliated with Northwell Lenox Hill and sees patients in Manhattan and Astoria. He completed both his general surgery residency and breast surgical oncology fellowship at NYU Langone. During his training he completed a prestigious research fellowship in Immunotherapy and Surgical Oncology at the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute. His research has focused on refining how breast cancer is treated surgically, how genetics and family history shape risk, and how the timing of a recurrence can reveal which patients need closer surveillance. Beyond the operating room, what drives Dr. Sporn is the conversation across the table from each patient: helping people understand their options clearly, cutting through the fear, and making the decision that’s right for them and their family. He believes the best care comes from patients who feel informed and heard, not rushed.

About Dr. Sporn
Full Bio
Dr. Sporn earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at NYU Langone. During his training he completed a prestigious research fellowship in Immunotherapy and Surgical Oncology at the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute under Dr. Steven Rosenberg, where his work on tumor-targeting T cell receptors led to several patents. He went on to complete his Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at NYU Langone.
His clinical expertise centers on surgical decision-making in breast cancer, with a particular focus on tailoring the operation to the patient rather than the diagnosis on paper. He has a strong interest in the de-escalation of surgery, including when axillary lymph node surgery can be safely reduced or omitted, and in the care of patients with BRCA and other genetic mutations, where family history, risk assessment, and risk-reducing options all come into play. His research has examined breast cancer in gene mutation carriers, axillary management, and the clinical differences between early and late recurrence after breast-conserving surgery, work that helps identify which patients need closer surveillance.
Dr. Sporn approaches every patient as a partner in their own care. He takes the time to walk through each option, answer the hard questions, and make sure no one feels pushed into a decision before they’re ready. For him, good surgery and good communication go hand in hand.
